Family honors tradition and announces death of musician Sonny Okosun’s father three months after his death at 110
Stella Okosun, younger sister of the late legendary musician Sonny Okosun, announced on Saturday the death of their father, Pa Duke Akhere Okosun.
Stella, a registered nurse and the brains of the United States Mission Health International Foundation, made the point in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Pa Okosun is believed to have died in October 2021 at the age of 110.
The late Pa Okosun was the Odionwele, second in command to the King of Irrua in Edo State.
She described her father as a disciplinarian and loving man who was loved by young and old.
Speaking on her father’s death, Stella said: “As Odionwele, second in command to the King of Irrua in Edo with about 20 villages under his care, traditional rites require that the announcement of his death wait after three months.
“When he died, we couldn’t announce it immediately because of traditional rites that require us to wait after three months.
“He was a fulfilled man and devoted to serving the people of his community to such an extent that one could not identify who his biological child was or who was not.
“He had nine children and apart from my brother, Sonny, who died in May 2008 in my arms in the United States, the other eight are all alive and well.”
Speaking about the late brother, she revealed that the late Odionwele never wanted her son, Sonny, to become a musician, especially as he was the first child in the family.
“My father never wanted my brother to be a musician because in those days educated people wanted their children to be lawyers, doctors or engineers.
“When my brother Sonny said he would be a musician, my father objected.
Back then, people looked down on musicians, especially when he was the first son in the family.
“It was my grandmother who encouraged him and told my father to leave Sonny alone. She was the one who raised my brother and told my parents to let Sonny be what he wanted to be” , she said.
