Ohio Democratic Party among P3 loan recipients


COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Democratic Party is among tens of thousands of organizations in Ohio that have received a loan under the federal wage protection program, according to a list released Monday by the US Small Business Administration.

The Ohio Democratic Party’s state candidate fund said it received a loan on May 6 worth $ 333,867, according to state campaign finance records. SBA records don’t show how many jobs the Ohio Democratic Party has kept thanks to the loan, which turns into a grant for organizations that use the funds to keep their employees. He received the loan through First Merchant’s Bank, according to SBA records, although the loan itself is backed by the federal government.

The loan to the ODP was in a list, released by the US SBA on Monday, on nearly 23,000 PPP loans of $ 150,000 or more made to Ohio-based businesses and nonprofits. The PPP is the centerpiece of a bipartisan federal coronavirus relief bill intended to help stimulate the economy following nationwide shutdowns aimed at slowing the spread of the virus.

On his Twitter account, ODP on May 13 asked how the loans were distributed, writing that many small businesses have been left behind while more than 300 publicly traded companies have received more than $ 1 billion from the program.

The Ohio Democratic Party was the only obvious example of a political party receiving a PPP loan in Ohio. The Ohio Republican Party did not need a PPP loan and did not apply for one, according to spokesman Evan Machan. However, a North Carolina minor league baseball team owned by Republican Governor Mike DeWine and his family received a loan worth $ 189,000, according to Associated Press.

The SBA on Monday released a second list showing loans under $ 150,000 – for a total of $ 4.2 billion spread over 117,390 loans – that did not include the names of the beneficiaries.
